CLACHAN to TAYINLOAN
From Clachan, use footpath alongside main road for 2 km, then continue on grass verge for 0.9 km, taking care where path goes behind crash barrier on descent to Ronachan car park. Look out for seals basking on rocks. For next 2 km, path meanders through rough bushes close to sea. You then cross main road (beware fast traffic) to continue on left side for 0.1 km before crossing again to continue through bushes and rocks with some parts along stony beach or on verge of road. Please keep to verge - running on the tarmac is cheating AND dangerous because of traffic overtaking. After 2 km close to main road, drop down to beach where it now diverges to right, away from road. Next 3.3 km is shingle beach - very sore on your feet! Avoid worst of loose stones by looking for firm ground or seaweed. At end of shingle beach, cross stream, head over grass 0.5 km on right of fence, go round trig point, then head for wartime lookout building. Join track passing through trees to Point Sands Caravan Park. At centre of caravan park (1.2 km after trig point) bear right, onto beach, and continue on sea-shore 2 km to Ferry Farm and jetty for ferry to Gigha. Toilets available here. Follow narrow tarmac road 1 km to Tayinloan village.
Checkpoint (at village hall car park) is shortly after shop.
(Total distance 15 km)
