Please Note
“Track” = track suitable for vehicles such as timber lorries.
“Path” = narrow path suitable only for people on foot.
All distances are approximate and may appear not to add up to total for section.
These notes should be taken as a supplement to the general notes on scenery and wildlife which you will find on the main Kintyre Way site.
TARBERT to CLAONAIG
From Tarbert (Fish Quay) look for arrow on opposite side of road indicating start of Kintyre Way. Go up narrow steps, follow path passing Tarbert Castle on left and continue on path climbing uphill. Watch carefully for Kintyre Way marker posts, ignoring other paths. After 2 km, reach cairn, then meet forestry track. Turn left and continue on track, with views over Loch Fyne, downhill a little, then climbing steadily. After 5 km, reach end of track, then continue on path over peaty ground, keeping same altitude. Ground soft in places, especially if weather has been wet. After 4 km on path, reach beginning of another track which goes steadily downhill (passing through gate), along wooded glen near river, brief uphill and through gate, then down to reach Skipness village shop after 4.5 km on track. Turn right on to level tarmac road parallel to shore for 3.5 km to car park at Claonaig ferry terminal.
(Total 19km)
